About St. Patrick’s

Saint Patrick's Basilica has a long history in the City of Ottawa as its first English-speaking Roman Catholic Parish. It was completed in 1875 and was declared a Basilica on Saint Patrick's Day, March 1995.

The Basilica is named for Scottish-born missionary Maewyn Succat. Fifteen hundred years ago he converted Ireland to Christianity, for which the Roman Catholic Church rewarded him with with a sainthood and the name with which he is better known: St. Patrick.
